Lactose intolerance is also referred to as intolerance to milk sugar, since the lactose absorbed with the food cannot be digested. The cause is deficient or diminished production of the digestive enzyme lactase. As a result, the uncleaved lactose inadvertently passes to the colon, where it is absorbed and fermented by the intestinal bacteria. The symptoms vary in each individual case and can be particularly severe.
